Narrated Aisha: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “The most beloved deeds to Allah are those performed in the ten days of Dhul Hijjah. They said, “Not even Jihad for the sake of Allah?” He said, “Not even Jihad for the sake of Allah, unless a man goes out himself for Jihad taking his wealth with him and does not come back with anything.” And (best deeds) are continuous feeding of people, and continuous remembrance of Allah.” The Prophet (ﷺ) added, “Whoever offers a sacrifice (i.e., Qurbani) after the prayer has completed his rituals (of Eid) and has followed the way of the Muslims.”

Qurbani

Qurbani

Qurbani, also known as Zabiha, is the ritual sacrifice of an animal during the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah, which is the 12th and final month of the Islamic calendar. The purpose of Qurbani is to commemorate the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and to show gratitude to Allah by giving back to the community.

In Afghanistan, the cost of Qurbani varies depending on the type of animal being sacrificed. Cow shares can cost anywhere from $80 to $120 CAD, while sheep can range from $180 to $220 CAD. The cost may also vary depending on the size and weight of the animal.

Despite the cost, the benefits of Qurbani are significant. First and foremost, Qurbani is a means of showing gratitude to Allah and strengthening one’s faith. It is also a way of providing meat to those who may not have access to it on a regular basis. The meat from the sacrificed animal is distributed to the poor and needy, including orphans and widows.

Qurbani also serves as a means of strengthening social bonds and promoting unity within the community. Muslims from all walks of life come together to perform this important act of worship, regardless of their social status, wealth, or background. It is a reminder that we are all equal in the eyes of Allah and that we should work together to help those in need.

In addition, the act of sacrificing an animal teaches us the values of sacrifice, generosity, and compassion. It is a reminder that we should be willing to give up our own comforts and possessions to help others, just as Prophet Ibrahim (AS) was willing to sacrifice his own son for the sake of Allah.

Overall, Qurbani is an important act of worship in Islam that has numerous benefits for both the individual and the community. While it may come at a cost, the rewards of performing Qurbani far outweigh the expense, and it is a small price to pay for the blessings and benefits that it brings.
